Good Practice
We seek to recognise good practice.
Strengthening local democracy means learning from what works, as well as understanding what needs to change.
We want to understand practices that support effective local democracy in town and parish councils: how they work, the circumstances that help them succeed and what others might learn from them. Recognition should rest on evidence, with attention to context rather than an assumption that one approach fits every council.
From understanding to improvement
01 / Investigate
Understand the problem
Examine evidence and context before drawing conclusions about systemic weaknesses.
02 / Learn
Look at what works
Recognise good practice and consider what makes it useful in its particular setting.
03 / Develop
Consider better approaches
Use that understanding to develop credible solutions proportionate to the problem.
Different perspectives.
A shared aim.
Effective local democracy needs people to take part.
We seek to bring residents, serving and former councillors and other participants together. Share a perspective, raise a systemic question or suggest good practice to learn from.
